Since inception, the Corporation has played an active role in developing the Indian Seed Industry, which is presently Rs. 15000 crores. The Corporation has been active in developing the State Seeds Corporations and assisting the efforts of Government of India in developing the private industry to ensure seed self sufficiency. The Corporation maintains a product basket of 60 crops and 600 varieties suitable for almost all climatic zones of India ensuring timely availability of good quality Certified seeds at reasonable prices for the Indian farming community. The Government of India has merged the erstwhile State Farms Corporation of India with NSC with effect from 01.04.2014. NSC, therefore, has around 22000 hectares of land which is witnessing mechanization through adoption of modern irrigation facilities like Center Pivot Systems and farm machinery. Large tracks of land are being brought under active cultivation thereby increasing the cropped area mainly for producing Breeder and Foundation seeds. The Corporation importantly ensures the systematic and scientific maintenance of ‘Seed Multiplication Chain’ converting ‘Breeder Seed’ into ‘Foundation Seed’ and then in ‘Certified Seed’. In the process, the Corporation is engaging farmers under the umbrella of ‘Seed Growers’ thereby creating entrepreneurial opportunities and facilitating the ‘Make in India’ concept of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. The Corporation has a well extended network of Regional Offices, Area Offices, and Quality monitoring laboratories, seed processing plants and storage facilities of godowns and cold storages to meticulously attend all facets of the seed production, processing and marketing activities. -2- Despite the deprivations of a normal agro-climatic atmosphere, the Corporation has maintained a satisfactory business, leading to achieve a net profit of Rs.38.84 Crores during the year 2014-15. The Corporation is striving to fulfill the mandate given to it, in the interest of the farmers of the country and the directions of the Government of India. Accordingly, it is participating in major programmes such as NFSM, NMOOP, and NMAET etc. On the guidance of the Hon’ble Minister, the Corporation is planning to have one Farm in each agro-climatic zone so that quality foundation seeds are produced in own farms and subsequently quality certified seeds will be made available to the farmers all over the country. In this regard, the Corporation is likely to start a farm in the state of Jharkhand very soon. This is to ensure local production of seeds and creating a show case for the farmers to indulge in seed production programmes. The Corporation is aware and shares an important responsibility for the Indian seed industry. Special emphasis is being given for production of Pulses, Oilseeds and Fodder seeds production and also varieties resistant / tolerant to biotic & abiotic stresses.
